is a common illness that used to affect a large amount of people in the past, but now because most of the people respect society’s hygiene rules and because the treatments are continuously improving, the number of scabies patients is decreasing.

Although scabies is not as common as it was once, there still are many cases of scabies among people, and once someone has it, it can spread very easily to others because it’s pretty contagious.

The cause of scabies is a tiny 8-legged mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. This mite is so small that you need a magnifying glass to see it. It is attracted by the human body’s smell and heat, and once it gets on the skin it starts to burrow until it reaches under its surface. They create tunnels in there and they start living inside these tunnels. The females also lay eggs in the skin, so once they establish they will soon spread. Sometimes if you look very careful you can see these tiny tunnels. The incubation period of scabies is a few weeks, so the symptoms only appear a few weeks after you get infected with the mites. However, you become contagious right after the infection, so you may have scabies and spread it and not even know about it.
The most common places where the mites prefer to live, and where the first symptoms appear are the hands and the feet.

How can scabies be spread to others? Well scabies is very contagious, it can be spread just by touching an infected person, or sleeping in the same bed with one. The mites can’t jump, so you can not get scabies if you just sit near someone who has it, but you can get it if you share clothes because they can remain in the clothes that someone infected wore. They can live in the clothes or in sheets for four days before they die of starvation.

You can also spread scabies to other parts of your body by touching an infected area and then touching the other clean parts.

Dogs and cats can also have scabies, but the mites that cause animal scabies are different from the ones that cause human scabies, and they can’t survive on the human skin for long, so you can’t get the illness from an animal.

After the incubation period the symptoms appear. These are small, pimple-sized irritations that itch and that cover the whole infected area. The itching gets worse and worse as time passes, and the mites continue to multiply, and if you don’t treat the scabies you may discover that you are infected with thousands of mites. So as soon as you see the first symptoms consult a doctor and begin the treatment.

A home remedy for scabies is a better treatment for a number of reasons. The creams that the doctor will supply you with have ingredients in them that have been linked to cancer! This is the problem with medication today – you tend to solve one problem and create another one. I am not saying that you will actually get cancer by using the cream, but, in my mind if you can have a home remedy for scabies, why would you use a cream with such ingredients in it?

Scabies can be common in children. When my son had scabies I was not happy about the scabies cream so I went the natural way. More and more people (including me) are turning towards natural medicine. One of the other benefits is that once you have your home remedy for scabies then you can start treating yourself without visiting your doctor. Don’t you just hate hanging around in the waiting rooms? I know I do.

One home remedy for scabies is Onions, yes that’s right onions – those things that make your eyes water when you are chopping them up. You will also need some coarse sea salt. The first thing that you will need to do is to cut the onions in half and scoop the middle out. Sprinkle the middle of the onion with the coarse sea salt. Then leave them in a bowl to dissolve and then use the liquid that is produced on the scabies. Put on the body and leave it on for as long as you can – preferably overnight. Some more advice don’t do it on a night when you are intending to seduce your loved one. There are better perfumes out there!

To select a different home remedy for scabies visit my, Scabies Squidoo lens and for more information on getting rid of scabies, No More Scabies. When you have had scabies the only good thing to come out of it is that if you ever get them again, you will be able to recognise the symptoms earlier. The earlier the home remedy for scabies is used the better.

Natural scabies treatment is a much safer way to treat scabies. If you have a child who has scabies, or you have scabies yourself no doubt you will be thinking first of all, where did we get it from? More often than not this is a question that you will not get answered. No-one wants to own up to it. Everyone automatically assumes that you have to be dirty or unclean to get scabies – this is not the case.

If you are having a rough time with scabies – they are persistent little critters – buy a mini microscope (usually you will pick these up from a pharmacy), as the mites are visible with this. It is no good just to treat the patient, everyone needs to treated, that’s right the whole household. Even down to Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles – anyone who has been in contact with the infected person. Now, I realise this may be a hard subject to tackle, but just remind yourself if its not treated properly, they will soon return. Get them treated with natural scabies treatment.

You will also need to wash sheets, clothing worn in the last week, cuddly toys, lounge suites. If anything is too hard to wash, put it in a bin bag and seal tightly. Leave this for 2 weeks before opening up again.

Your doctor will prescribe some cream that needs to be left on for 8 hours, now my advice is check out the ingredients in that cream as they have been linked to cancer and leukemia. I know its hard to believe, but this is whats happening in the world of medicine now. The people who manufacture ‘these creams’ are only thinking dollars and profit! This is why many people are steering towards the natural way and using a natural scabies treatment.

A safer alternative is to use natural scabies treatment. For more details visit my lens, Natural Scabies Treatment. To take a close look at scabies visit Photos of Scabies.

When you have had scabies the only good thing to come out of it is that if you ever get them again, you will be able to recognise the symptoms earlier. The earlier the natural scabies treatment is used the better.

If you or any of your family are suffering from this condition and you would like to know how to kill scabies, you may be pleased to learn that you can use home treatment for scabies very effectively and this can avoid the need to use insecticides which many feel can have potentially dangerous side effects.

The tell-tale rash of scabies can be seen in various places, including the wrists, between the fingers, in the armpits, under the breasts, around the waist and groin, between the toes and around the ankles. Many people also experience the rash around their genital area. Occasionally people notice burrow marks, but these silvery lines can be notoriously difficult to see as they look like tiny white scratches which can be almost invisible to the naked eye.

Scabies is usually caught by direct contact with an infected person but can sometimes be caught from clothing or bedding and towels which have themselves been used by someone with scabies. It can spread from person to person very quickly so any treatment should be used by all closed family members at the same time. This is very important even if other family members are showing no sign of the condition as it can take up to 6 weeks from infection for symptoms to become apparent.

Knowing how to kill scabies naturally is advantageous as prescription medication inevitably contains insecticides, the most widely prescribed one being Permethrin. This can have short-lived side effects in some people which include burning and itching. However, the more worrying aspect of this treatment is the fact that it is a derivative of a chemical called Pyrethrum which has been the subject of speculation that it may be carcinogenic. In addition, there are often strict restriction on usage-for example where pregnant or breast-feeding women are concerned or very young children which can make eliminating scabies effectively very difficult.

One excellent natural treatment to kill scabies involves tea tree oil. This Australian oil has, in recent years, been hailed as a wonder treatment for all manner of conditions. It has very powerful natural antiseptic and insecticidal properties and is considered to be very safe. If you add 20 drops of oil to an average sized bath of warm water and soak in it up to your neck for 15 minutes, this can not only help kill scabies but will soothe skin which has been made sore by scratching. In addition, it is beneficial to apply diluted tea tree oil directly to the worst affected areas by putting a few drops on a cotton wool ball or pad.

Preventing reinfestation is an important part of scabies treatment and you should pay particular attention to good general hygiene. Clothing, bedding, children’s toys and towels should all be laundered at 50 degrees or above. If this is not possible, place them in a sealed plastic bag for at least 72 hours and any eggs or mites will perish.

There are various other methods which can be used either in combination or isolation to treat scabies naturally. If you would like an extensive report which details home treatments which will eradicate scabies in just 24 hours, please see How To Kill Scabies.

Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. The name Sarcoptes scabiei is derived from the Greek words sarx (the flesh) and koptein (to smite or cut) and the Latin word scabere. It is characterized by superficial burrows, intense pruritus (itching) and secondary infection. Scabies is spread by personal contact, e.g., by shaking hands or sleeping together or by close contact with infected articles such as clothing, bedding or towels. The infection spreads more easily in crowded conditions and in situations where there is a lot of close contact – like child-care centers or nursing homes. The most prominent symptom of scabies is intense itching particularly at night. The scabies mite is an obligate parasite and completes its entire life cycle on humans. Other variants of the scabies mite can cause infestation in other mammals such as dogs, cats, pigs, ferrets, and horses, and these variants can infest human skin as well. Scabies is a worldwide public health problem, affecting persons of all ages, races, and socioeconomic groups.

Scabies mites are very fastidious. Scabies rash appears as tiny red intensely itchy bumps on the limbs and trunk. Scabies can be spread by the insect itself or by the egg. Prompt action is required to rid a person of the insects and eggs. The areas of the body most commonly affected by scabies are the hands and feet (especially the webs of skin between the fingers and toes), the inner part of the wrists, and the folds under the arms. However, other forms of physical contact, such as mothers hugging their children, is sufficient to spread the mites. In a classic scabies infection, anywhere from 5-15 mites live on the host. Little evidence of infection exists during the first month, but after 4 weeks and with subsequent infections, a delayed-type IV hypersensitivity reaction to the mites, eggs, and scybala occurs. Because of the contagious nature of scabies, doctors often recommend treatment for entire families or contact groups to eliminate the mite.

Causes of Scabies

The common causes and risk factor’s of Scabies include the following:

A mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) which burrows under the skin.

An arthropod of the order Acarina.

Skin-to-skin contact.

Physical contact, such as mothers hugging their children.

Contact with someone else who is infected with it.

Sharing clothing or bedding with an infected person can spread the mites.

Symptoms of Scabies

Some sign and symptoms related to Scabies are as follows:

Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.

Pus-filled bumps.

Impetigo, a bacterial skin infection.

Scabies burrows.

Sores on the body caused by scratching.

Generalised rash.

Treatment of Scabies

Here is list of the methods for treating Scabies:

Several topical treatments exist for scabies, the most common of which are Kwell lotion (lindane) and Elimite (permethrin).

Topical (surface) medications are often effective and must be applied thoroughly to all skin from the face down, especially to areas known to be primarily affected (skin folds, etc.).

If scabies is suspected, the doctor may scrape a small part of the affected skin and examine the scrapings under a microscope for signs of scabies mites.

Two medications commonly prescribed are permethrin (Elimite, Acticin) and crotamiton (Eurax).

Benzyl benzoate emulsion.

The doctor may prescribe antibiotics if your child develops a bacterial skin infection such as impetigo in addition to the scabies infection.

Doctors sometimes prescribe oral medications for people with altered immune systems or for people who don’t respond to the prescription lotions and creams.

Scabies can not be cured only with home remedies but at least it can prevent scabies from reinfecting you and can help you get over the symptoms more easily.

The most important thing in keeping scabies away from you is adopting a perfect hygiene. You must cut your nails in order to remove possible mites and eggs of scabies that had sheltered there; wash your clothes, towels and other laundry in hot water at 120oF and do not share them with anyone because they can get infected. Also, the brushes, combs and hair accessories must be disinfected too and boiled in hot water in order for the parasites to die. All the furniture and carpets must be vacuumed and the vacuum cleaner bag must be thrown away.

The treatment must be followed as prescribed and it must not be used for a longer period of time because it can cause allergies and skin burnings.

In order to get rid of the itching you can use antihistamine drugs such as Benadryl, Atarax, Zyrtec, and Phenergan.

The treatment prescribed by the doctor will consist of a lotion called Elimite that contains permethrin and is safe to use on children too. This lotion must be applied on the body from neck to toes before bedtime and washed off in the morning. The treatment must be repeated. It is not recommended to use a lotion based on lindane because of its high toxicity rate especially in children. In pregnant women only permethrin is safe to use.

Scabies is transmittable to family members, roommates, sexual partners and to those who live in crowded places. Check-ups are necessary for all these people to see if they got infected or not.

Because of the intense itching, the skin can get infected and antibiotic drug treatment should be followed.

The doctor should be called if you suspect scabies has infected you because home remedies can not cure this disease. The symptoms for scabies are intense itching especially at night and red marks and blisters over the fingers, the elbows, the wrists and all around the waist.

Scabies is not a reason for going to the emergency room, all you have to do is give your doctor a phone call to establish an appointment but do not forget to tell him about your symptoms. If your child has scabies and the intense itching determined him to scratch until blood appeared, you should go to the emergency department to prevent any other skin infections from occurring in the injured area.

The efficiency of existing scabies treatments depends on factors such as the patient’s age and overall health, the accuracy of the diagnosis, the stage of progression of the skin disease and the speed of medical intervention. While the treatment of scabies is usually efficient in eradicating the infestation with scabies mites in healthy patients, killing the intruding parasitic organisms in at most 10 days of correct administration, existing scabies treatments are less efficient when administered to very young patients (infants and babies), elderly patients and patients with impaired immune system. Such categories of patients generally require a longer course of scabicide medications (medications that kill the parasitic scabies mites), which should be administered both under the form of creams, gels and lotions for external use and oral capsules or tablets (to maximize efficiency).

It is important to understand that even if the infestation with scabies mites is rapidly eradicated, the symptoms of scabies may persist for as well as 14 days after the mites have been killed. This is primarily due to the fact that scabicides are aimed at eliminating the cause of scabies, not its effects (such medications kill the scabies mites but rarely include pharmaceutical agents that control the existing symptoms of scabies). Secondarily, even with the help of medications that are aimed at controlling scabies rash, inflammation, discomfort, soreness and itch, such symptoms can persist until the body skin completely eliminates the mites’ toxic carcasses, inactive eggs, secretions and feces which continue to produce allergic reactions.

The accuracy and the speed of diagnosis have a very important role in the treatment of scabies. Considering that scabies produces a wide variety of non-specific symptoms (rash and skin inflammation are also symptoms of other skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis or chicken pox), doctors may sometimes decide upon an erroneous diagnosis if they only rely on patients’ reports of symptoms and clinical examinations. Scabies can be properly diagnosed only after finding clear signs of infestation with scabies mites. In order to reveal conclusive evidence of the mites’ presence on a patient’s skin, doctors often take a sample of affected skin for elaborate analysis under the microscope (the procedure is simple and painless, as only a superficial layer of skin is collected for analysis). If the skin samples contain mite eggs or feces squeezed in tiny borrows, then the patient is diagnosed with scabies and is given the appropriate treatment.

While a timely prescribed treatment is more efficient in eradicating the infestation with scabies mites (the mites are killed before they have the chance to proliferate) and prevents the intensification of existing symptoms, a lately prescribed treatment may have decreased potency (due to formation of crust at the surface of the affected skin, crust that prevents the local treatment from being properly absorbed into the skin). In addition, an early prescribed scabies treatment can neutralize the contagious character of scabies, preventing the mites from contaminating other persons who interact with the afflicted patient. Thus, speed of medical intervention is crucial in the treatment of scabies.

Scabies is a skin condition caused by infestation with microscopic parasite mites. Although it can be acquired by anyone, scabies has the highest incidence in very young children and the elderly. Scabies is highly contagious and it can cause serious endemics in overcrowded orphanages, nursing homes and asylums. Due to their limited mobility, infants and elderly people are the most exposed to acquiring scabies during outbreaks. On the premises of a weak immune system, scabies can lead to serious bacterial or fungal infections, causing serious complications.

Most of the symptoms of scabies occur due to allergic reactions to the mites’ secretions and eggs. Once they find a human host, female mites burrow within the epidermis and lay their eggs, causing pruritic rashes, skin inflammation and severe itch. Later symptoms include pustules, blisters and linear burrows.

People with compromised immune systems experience more intense symptoms of scabies and they present a higher risk of developing complications. When suffering from scabies, people with underlying immuno-deficitary conditions are very exposed to developing serious skin disorders such as impetigo. In addition to the common symptoms of scabies, people with weak immune systems can develop prominent skin lesions, nodules and crust.

Common topical creams for external use are usually ineffective in overcoming severe forms of scabies. While commonly used medications such as permethrin and lindane can eradicate the mite infestation in most people affected by scabies, patients with HIV and the elderly don’t respond well to such forms of treatment. Administered to immuno-compromised patients, lindane can sometimes cause serious neurotoxic reactions. Thus, dermatologists usually recommend oral medications to people who suffer from severe forms of scabies and people with hypersensitivity to topical creams.

One of the most effective oral drugs used in the treatment of scabies has proved to be ivermectin. This strong oral medication can effectively overcome severe forms of infestation with mites such as crusted scabies. Although ivermectin has various side-effects, this type of oral medication is better tolerated than lindane or other topical medications for external use. In present, ivermectin is a reliable alternative to topical creams in the treatment for scabies. Ivermectin is cheaper and more effective than other oral medications as well. Thanks to its strong curative properties, ivermectin can eradicate the infestation with scabies mites in a shorter period of treatment, thus minimizing eventual side-effects. Furthermore, ivermectin can also diminish the chances of a second infestation.

In present, ivermectin is still an experimental drug and it hasn’t yet been approved for extended use. However, research results indicate that this type of oral medication has very few side-effects and it can be safely used in the treatment of scabies.

If you would like to know what to do about scabies mites, then first of all it is important to understand a little about what they are and how they can affect you. Scabies is a type of skin infection caused by a tiny mite which burrows under the skin, where it lives and reproduces. The symptoms of scabies are caused by an allergic reaction.

Although there is a general belief that being unclean or dirty makes you more likely to get scabies, this is not the case and anyone can get scabies, with children and the elderly living in nursing homes being more likely to get them due to there being large concentrations of people in schools, nurseries and nursing homes. Typical signs of scabies mites include an itchy rash, (often worse after a bath) sometimes consisting of tiny blisters. The rash is often found on hands,, feet, armpits, elbows, the genitals, breasts, wrists and groin.

In terms of what to do about scabies mites, you should ensure that you tell the people who are in close direct contact with you and your family, such as schools and possibly work colleagues as they can then take preventative measures and, of course, check to see if they are infected too. Scabies can be spread from the items used by an infected person so these should be treated. You should also be aware that scabies can spread from the infected person before the symptoms show and therefore before the person is aware of the condition.

You also need to decide what to do about scabies mites in terms of treatment. There are various lotions and creams you can get from your doctor or pharmacy, which can be effective in killing the mites. However, many people prefer not to use these due to the fact that they can contain harmful insecticides which have, in a number of instances, shown to have harmful effects. There are also a range of natural yet highly effective, safe, natural treatments you can try.

If you would like an extensive report which details exactly what to do about scabies mites and includes the use of home treatments which will eradicate scabies in just 24 hours, please see Home Cure For Scabies.

This is an alternative method to using over the counter scabies treatment which has successfully helped many thousands of people worldwide.

First and foremost, what is scabies? Scabies is an infection in the skin that is contagious; it is a skin disease that is extremely communicable. This kind of skin disease is really itchy and looks like a pimple that is so itchy and irritating.

Various kinds of scabies remedies are shown by many people; but those remedies may or may not be that easy to do, of course, it depends on the stage of itchiness that a person is suffering. First, we should know about the scabies’ signs and symptoms, this is very important before undergoing scabies treatments. In this manner, we will be able to know and find out what kind of treatment should be done. The most common scabies symptom is severe itching, most especially in the evening. Actually, a scabies rash can be visible on the skin that looks like little blisters, but mostly in some serious cases, the skin can be scaly or crusty.
